Georgia Institute of Technology, located in Atlanta, GA, is a highly rated public research university. Georgia Tech’s 2026-2027 Prompts

Georgia Tech does not have a supplemental essay prompt for the 2026-2027 admissions cycle. First-year applicants complete one of the seven Common App personal essay prompts (650 words or fewer), and there is no additional Georgia Tech short-answer question. In previous cycles, Georgia Tech asked applicants to explain why they wanted to study their chosen major at Georgia Tech in 300 words or fewer, but that question has been eliminated.

General Tips

Given that Georgia Tech will read only your Common App personal essay in this upcoming admissions cycle, it may feel like there is a lot of pressure to make that essay perfect. While the rest of this article will help you compose the best version of this essay that you can, before starting your essay, you may want to outline your essay before writing (or after!).

There are two main approaches to writing an essay: drafting, and outlining then drafting. If you’ve already decided your essay topic, then outlining first might be your best bet. This way, you can make sure your essay focuses on that one topic and doesn’t stray.

If you’re struggling to decide what to focus on in your supplemental essay, drafting a few ideas and exploring these ideas through writing can help bring you closer to what you really want to write about.

However, if pursuing this strategy, you need to be especially careful that your essay is cohesive and efficiently written. If you choose not to write an outline first, you may want to write one after you’ve composed your draft. This will help you organize your existing essay. Known as a reverse outline, and this strategy can help you identify structural issues in an essay draft.

Writing for Georgia Tech Without a Supplemental Essay

Without a supplemental essay, you have fewer chances to speak directly to the Georgia Tech admissions officers, so the chances you do have matter more. Your Common App personal essay (650 words or fewer) is now the only essay Georgia Tech will read. Keep in mind that this essay goes to every school on your list, so it should not be a “Why Georgia Tech” essay in disguise. Instead, use the personal essay to show who you are: your curiosity, your values, and the way you think through problems. If you need a refresher on the seven prompts, check out our guide to the Common App essays.

That said, your intended major still matters at Georgia Tech. Applicants select a primary major (and, optionally, a secondary major of interest) on the Common App, and Georgia Tech’s admissions team looks for evidence of your interest in and preparation for the major you list. In past cycles, the supplemental essay was where you made that case. Now, that evidence needs to come from the rest of your application. Here are a few ways to make it visible:
