Before you begin writing the first essay, read through all the prompts. That way, you can pace yourself. If a topic has multiple facets that could be discussed in different essays, versus getting jammed into one essay, then go for it. What might seem like an excessive number of essays to write is actually just an abundance of opportunities to show Caltech who you are.

Moreover, the optional essay prompt is really just that: optional. In order to be effective and boost your chances of admission, your Caltech supplemental essays need to be thoughtful, organized, proofread, and specific. If you only have the bandwidth to bring your best writing talents to the required prompts, you should feel no pressure to write one more rushed essay. In addition, the optional prompt won’t relate to all applicants. In other words, don’t try to write a response to the optional prompt if it doesn’t speak to you. Instead, consider all of the parts of yourself you’d really like Caltech to know, and do your best to incorporate them into the essays you are required to write.

That said, let’s dive in.

Caltech Required STEM Academic Interest Question

Caltech has a rigorous core curriculum and students don’t declare a major until the end of their first year. However, some students arrive knowing which academic fields and areas already most excite them, or which novel fields and areas they most want to explore. If you had to choose an area of interest or two today, what would you choose? Why did you choose your proposed area of interest? If you selected ‘other’, what topics are you interested in pursuing? (150-200 words)

Although you’re not bound to study whatever major or area of interest you describe in this essay, you should answer authentically. Through the Caltech supplemental essays, the admissions team seeks curious, driven individuals who already know they want to pursue STEM. Because of this, you’ll want to let your passion shine through.

In addition, whether you have a particular origin story behind your academic interest(s), or you simply enjoy pursuing the questions behind your interest(s), this essay response will benefit from specific details. For example, you hope to study computer science, explain to the reader what kind of computer science you’re interested in, how you became interested in this subfield, and, if you have space, what you hope to do with this degree. Don’t be afraid to sound nerdy!

Caltech Scholarly Character Essays

Caltech frames this pair of prompts with a question: “How do you learn when there is no easy answer?” You’ll answer one of the two options below in 200 words or fewer. Both options are getting at the same underlying trait, a willingness to keep working when the answer isn’t obvious, so choose the option that comes with your most specific story rather than the one that sounds more impressive.

Option 1 – Collaboration: Tell us about a time your learning in STEM was shaped by another person or group, either because you needed help, offered help, changed your thinking through collaboration, or contributed to someone else’s understanding. What did that experience teach you about learning and working with others? (200 words or fewer)

This option asks you to think about STEM as something you do with other people. Notice how broad the prompt is: you could write about needing help, offering it, changing your mind because of a collaborator, or helping someone else finally understand a concept. Whichever direction you choose, admissions officers want to see that you can learn from and alongside others, because that is how learning works at Caltech, where the core curriculum is famously demanding and students lean on one another to get through it.

Some situations that could work well here:

The teammate on your robotics build who spotted the flaw in your wiring, and what it took to hear that feedback

Tutoring a younger student in algebra and discovering you didn’t understand the material as well as you thought

A group research project where a disagreement over methods changed how you approach experiments

Finally asking a teacher for help after weeks of being stuck, and what that taught you about when to stop struggling alone

The second sentence of the prompt is where most of your points are: “What did that experience teach you about learning and working with others?” Spend at least a third of your 200 words on that lesson, and make it specific to you. “I learned that teamwork is important” tells Caltech nothing. “I learned that I explain things best when I’m drawing, so now I keep a whiteboard marker in my backpack” tells them exactly who will be showing up to their study groups.

Option 2 – Process: Tell us about a time your approach to a STEM problem, concept, or project mattered as much as the outcome. How did you work through uncertainty or persist creatively in tackling the problem? What would you still defend about your process, regardless of the outcome? (200 words or fewer)

If you’ve ever been more proud of how you attacked a problem than of the answer you got, this is your prompt. Caltech is explicitly telling you that the outcome matters less than the thinking, so a failed experiment, an unsolved olympiad problem, or a project that never quite worked can make a stronger essay here than a clean success.

Pick one problem and walk the reader through your process in enough detail that they could follow your reasoning. What was your first approach, and why did it fail? What did you try next? Where did you have to guess, and how did you decide which guess to make? Admissions officers (and the Caltech faculty who review the most competitive files) want to see how you reason under uncertainty, so don’t smooth over the messy middle.

The final question, “What would you still defend about your process, regardless of the outcome?”, is unusual, and it deserves a direct answer. Name the decision you would make again, even knowing how things turned out, and explain why. That kind of conviction, paired with honesty about what went wrong, is exactly the scholarly character Caltech is looking for.

Caltech Scientific Drive Essays

Caltech introduces these three prompts with a question of its own: “How does STEM come alive in your life through learning, pursuing, or making?” You’ll choose two of the three options and answer each in 200 words or fewer. Caltech also reminds you that faculty review applications, so feel free to get technical. The three options overlap a little, so before you commit, jot down your best possible topic for each one and choose the two that don’t repeat each other (or anything you’ve already written in your academic interest essay).

Option 1 – Learning: Regardless of your STEM interest listed above, take this opportunity to nerd out and talk to us about whatever STEM rabbit hole you have found yourself falling into. Be as specific or broad as you would like. (200 words or fewer)

If there were any details or interests you couldn’t fit into the answer above, here’s your opportunity to explore them further. Note that the wording of the prompt indicates that you should only discuss one rabbit hole in this essay. Instead of discussing all your interests in one place, focus on one topic you’ve regularly been Googling, reading about, watching YouTube videos on, or otherwise researching. Remember, there are quite a few Caltech essays. Therefore, you should aim for depth instead of breadth in this essay. Any topics you wish you could have addressed here, you’ll likely have the opportunity to address in another essay.

Option 2 – Pursuing: Tell us about a STEM question, problem, idea, or project that has held your attention over time. What drew you to it, how have you pursued it, and what do you still want to understand? (200 words or fewer)

Where the Learning option is about the rabbit hole you fell into last month, this one is about the question you can’t put down. The prompt has three parts, past, present, and future: what drew you to the question, how you have pursued it, and what you still want to understand. A strong response answers all three, and the last part is often the most revealing, because it shows admissions officers how you think about the edges of your own knowledge.

If you’re having trouble coming up with topics for this essay, consider focusing on whatever interest has the best story behind it. Note that the prompt expects a singular topic, not multiple topics. This prompt expects you to provide the past, present, and future of a particular interest. Therefore, if you have been pursuing any particular topic for a while, then that topic might fit well into this essay.

“Pursued” is the key word. Whatever your topic, show the reader what you actually did about it: the simulations you wrote, the papers you read past the abstract, the science fair project that turned into a second and third iteration, the emails you sent to a professor who never wrote back. Then close with the open question. Ending on what you don’t yet understand is not a weakness in this essay; it’s proof that your curiosity is still running.

Option 3 – Making: Tell us about something you created, tested, repaired, modeled, coded, built, or redesigned. What problem were you trying to solve and what did the process reveal to you? (200 words or fewer)

This essay is your space to describe a project you’ve undertaken, a way you’ve optimized your daily life, a practical idea you’ve come up, or something along these lines. The more creative, the better. Consider the times when you’ve worked with your hands, solved practical problems for your family or friends, or used your technical skills to create something new and unexpected.

The wording of this prompt is deliberately concrete: “created, tested, repaired, modeled, coded, built, or redesigned.” That list is an invitation to think beyond polished inventions. A bike you fixed with a part you machined yourself, a spreadsheet model that predicts your school’s cafeteria lines, a game you coded for a younger sibling, or a rain barrel you redesigned after the first one overflowed all count. Choose the project you can describe in the most physical, specific detail.

Then answer the two questions Caltech actually asks. What problem were you trying to solve? State it plainly, and explain why it mattered to you. And what did the process reveal to you? This is where you get to reflect: maybe you discovered that you prototype too early, or that debugging is the part you secretly love, or that the “simple” fix required understanding a whole system. Give the process and its lessons at least as much space as the finished product. Caltech is far more interested in how you build than in what you built.

Caltech Fun Question

Caltech students bring more than academic ability to the communities they join. What is something you would be excited to do, share, teach, make, start, or contribute as part of the Caltech community? (100-150 words)

After a set of intensely STEM-focused prompts, this one is meant to be exactly what it says: fun. Caltech wants to know what you’d bring to the community beyond your problem-set skills. Note the verbs in the prompt: do, share, teach, make, start, or contribute. You could write about a tradition you’d love to join, a skill you’d teach your housemates, or a club that doesn’t exist yet but should. A few directions to consider:

A recipe you’d cook for your house, whose family-style weeknight dinners are a Caltech tradition

A pickup game or intramural rivalry you’d start, or a spot on one of the NCAA Division III teams that about a quarter of Caltech students play on

A skill you’d teach, from silk screening in the visual arts studio to a card game your family invented

A club Caltech doesn’t have yet, in the spirit of its Cheese Society and Quizbowl team

You have 100 to 150 words, so pick one thing and make it vivid. Show the reader the moment: the smell of the kitchen, the hand-lettered flyer for your new club, the first meeting where three people showed up. A little research helps here; browse Caltech’s student life pages and reference something real, like the house system or Ditch Day, so admissions officers can picture you on campus. Just keep the focus on what you would add, not on how much you admire Caltech.

Caltech Optional Academic Short Answer Question

Caltech cares about context. Is there anything about your academic preparation, coursework, school context, or learning experiences that would help us better understand your readiness for Caltech?

This prompt replaces Caltech’s previous question about extenuating circumstances, and it is broader. Caltech is asking for context about your academic preparation: a school that doesn’t offer calculus or physics, a schedule conflict that kept you out of an advanced course, a semester disrupted by illness or a move, or a self-taught path you took because the classes you wanted didn’t exist. If your transcript doesn’t tell the full story of your readiness for Caltech, you can tell it here, in an essay with no official word limit.

Be as specific, humble, and honest as you can be here. Moreover, don’t write more than you need to. Although there’s no official word limit on this essay, the admissions officers at Caltech are busy individuals. As briefly as you can, provide the details of your extenuating circumstances, but don’t provide more information than necessary.

One more note: this box is for context, not for a fourth Scientific Drive essay. If your preparation has been straightforward and your coursework speaks for itself, it is completely fine to leave it blank.

If you need help polishing up your Caltech supplemental essays, check out our College Essay Review service.
