An Honest First Read

We'll show you where your essay stands

Most AI tools tell you your essay is great. This grader is deliberately tough: a typical first draft scores in the 40s to 60s, and anything above 85 is rare. It flags what's holding your essay back. Fixing it is the work, and that's what our consultants do. Here's a sample analysis of a Common App draft about fixing a grandfather's broken radio.

Solid

A real, specific story with a clear arc. Held back by a safe ending and a few "telling" sentences that explain what the scene already showed.

Strongest line
"The static had a rhythm to it, like someone breathing through a wall."

A precise, surprising image that does the emotional work without announcing it.

Weakest line
"That experience taught me that patience and persistence are the keys to success."

This is the generic lesson every reader has seen a thousand times. Cut it and trust the scene to carry the point.

Illustrative example. Your scores will depend on your draft, prompt, and school. Your full analysis also flags 10 to 15 phrases in your essay that need work.
The Rubric

What your essay is scored on

Every essay is scored 1 to 7 in five categories. It's the same rubric our Ivy League consultants use in every Next Admit essay review. Our co-founders, Gohar (MIT) and Mahad (Harvard), built it after reading thousands of applications. Read the full methodology.

Richness

Does your essay put the reader inside a scene? Vivid, specific detail scores high. Generic description scores low.

Insight

How deep is your reflection? "Hard work pays off" scores a 1 or 2. Mature thinking that shows real growth scores a 6 or 7.

Voice

Does it sound like you? Genuine, conversational writing scores high. Stiff, formal, or AI-sounding writing loses points.

Authenticity

Is it honest? The strongest essays admit imperfections. Stories that feel too polished score low.

Mechanics

Does it read cleanly? We check grammar, flow, and structure. Any noticeable error caps this score at 4.

College Essay Grader FAQ

Is the College Essay Grader really free?

Yes. You get three full grades per month at no cost and with no account. We ask for your email so we can send you a link to your results. If you want a human to edit the essay, that's our paid College Essay Review.

What is a good score?

The grader is conservative on purpose. Most drafts land between 40 and 70. A 70 or above means the essay is strong. Scores above 85 are rare. If your first draft scores in the 50s, that's normal. Fix the weakest line and the comments, then regrade.

Can it grade my Common App essay? Supplementals? UC PIQs?

All of them. Pick the essay type and the grader adjusts what it rewards. All seven Common App prompts and all eight UC PIQs are built in. For a supplemental, paste any prompt and name the school.

How is this different from asking ChatGPT?

A chatbot gives a different, usually generous, answer every time. The grader scores every essay on the same rubric with explicit rules. For example, any noticeable error caps mechanics at 4, and generic or AI-sounding writing gets penalized. It also grades your essay as an answer to your specific prompt and school.

Will it write or rewrite my essay for me?

No. It scores your draft and tells you what to change. It never writes replacement text, so the essay stays yours.

Is my essay kept private?

Yes. We store your essay with your results link only. We never publish, share, or sell it. Your essay is sent to OpenAI's API to generate the grade, and under OpenAI's API data policy, it is not used to train their models. Email support@nextadmit.com to delete a grade.

Does a high score mean I'll get in?

No, but it will help you put your best foot forward. Admissions is holistic and unpredictable, and no single essay guarantees a decision. A high score means your writing is strong in the areas admissions officers care about.

How accurate is it?

Think of it as a sharp first reader. The rubric keeps scores consistent, and the comments point to specific issues. Occasionally a comment may miss the mark, and you can dismiss it on your results page. For a full human read, our consultants use the same rubric.

Who built the rubric?

Next Admit's co-founders, Gohar Khan (MIT) and Mahad Khan (Harvard), wrote the five-category rubric after reading thousands of college essays. It's the same rubric behind the scores in our consultant reviews. Read the methodology.

Is it cheating to use an AI essay grader?

No. Getting feedback on your own writing is a normal part of the process, just like asking a teacher or counselor to read your draft. What schools prohibit is submitting writing that isn't yours. Our grader never writes for you, so your essay stays your own.
